The Wilson Wetland Preserve on Sand Hill Road in Putney is a great destination in the spring, summer and fall to look for both migrating warblers and wetland birds. 115 species have been seen and heard at this location over the years, including some generally hard to find wetland birds. These have included Virginia Rail, American Bittern, Wilson Snipe and Sora. This spot offers the opportunity to either bird from the car or park and go on a pleasant walk around the marsh and through the woods behind the marsh.
To get there: From Brattleboro, take I-91 North to the Putney exit (exit 4). Turn left off the interstate exit, then right on Highway 5. Take highway 5 through Putney, past the general store and the dam, and then turn left on Sand Hill Road. There is a parking area on the left side of Sand Hill Road before the marsh. Trails depart from the East side of the Marsh (across the road from the parking area) and from behind the Putney School on Putney School Road. You can reach the school by continuing on Sand Hill Road, then turning right on Putney School Road. The school will be on your right. Birding from Sand Hill Road can also be very fruitful. Finish your trip with a visit to the Putney General Store for a baked good or a coffee!
